Various Artists- Box Of Dub - Dubstep & Future Dub (2007)

Bought the CD and also the double vinyl copy of this release from Soul Jazz Records in Soho, London when it first came out. Kind of started me on my little dubstep enquiry, this has all the big names on there and is a good intro into what it's all about.

Orbital - Belfast/Wasted - The Best of Volume EP (1995)

By popular demand, I found my copy in the far flung corners of my storage unit! Yes i know it has a few scratches but this is another one that has been abused in late night drunken behaviour and lived through many PS1, PS2 and Sega Genesis sessions. We all know the classic Belfast, well this is a vocal version of it featuring Grant Fulton, who also did the vocal on the Orbital track 'The Box' if you really want to know. Comes with a rather nice poster of Phil and Paul, not sure what the reasoning behind that idea was but I guess it's a nice to have.

Tracklisting:

1. Belfast/Wasted (Wasted Vocal Mix) (7:03)
2. Therapy? Innocent X (Remix) (2:56)

Telefon Tel Aviv - You Are The Worst Thing In The World (Remixes) (2009)

What a tragedy it was to hear how Charlie Cooper, one half of Telefon Tel Aviv, took his own life only a couple of days after releasing the album 'Immolate Yourself' in late January of this year. I haven't stopped listening to that album for the past 3 months and the attention to detail is just so amazing there is no doubt in my mind that his production technique was genius. This is the first single release from the album and features a couple of minimal club friendlier versions as well as the album version. If you haven't yet heard the full album I strongly recommend you do.

Tracklisting:

1. The Worst Thing In The World (Jay Haze Remix)
2. Your Mouth
3. The Worst Thing In The World (Gaiser's Possibly The Universe Remix)

Orbital - Are We Here? (Remixes) (1994)

Got a couple of old Orbital releases to share tonight and this is the first from the 1994 album Snivilisation. In my opinion one of the standout tunes on that album which included the vocals of a very youthful Alison Goldfrapp. On this single release we're treated to 3 very different mixes. Have dated a little in particular the flipside remix 'They Did It' by Gareth Jones & Neil McLelland, worth a listen though.

Tracklisting:

1. Are We Here? (Who Are They?)
2. Are We Here? (Do They Here?)

Orbital - The Green Album (1991)

An essential album I'd say, Orbital's very first album from 1991 and including the classics like 'Chime' and 'Belfast'. The 'Brown Album' from 1993 seems to have dated a little better but this album changed my life forever, not sure if 18 years later it will do the same for new listeners, but it should still be appreciated for what it is and how it broke new ground in British techno.

Tracklisting:

James Holden - Solstice / I Have Put Out The Light (2001)

Long before James Holden had started his label Border Community he was first signed to London based label Silver Planet with the likes of Timo Maas. This has become a progressive classic over the past 8 years and took a few years for people to understand it's true significance to UK house music. The B side track is my pick.

Satoshi Tomiie is another one who's been around for over 20 years, working with Frankie Knuckles, David Morales and loads more. This is from his own label Saw Recordings which featured top producers and had quite an eclectic sound I remember, they brought Nathan Fake to my attention. No introduction needed and I don't need to remind you that they're the best electronic act out of the UK, ever. This was a limited edition release of the gorgeous 'One Perfect Sunrise' release. Alter Ego - Rocker (2004)

Holy shit what a busy week that was! No time for blogging at all, but it's the weekend now and before I head out into the garden and attempt to lay a new lawn I'll share what I was listening to late last night whilst sipping on a single malt.

I'll warn you now that I've unpacked another box of breaks tunes. It's not that I'll be always posting breaks but I'm having fun listening to them again. I've got some new stuff waiting in the wings which I'll get up here soon.

Alter Ego are Germans Jörn Elling Wuttke & Roman Flügel and they've been around for years banging out techno tunes for the likes of Harthouse since 1993. They hit the big time with this tune when Fatboy Slim's label Skint licensed it from German label Klang Elektronik. Always going to be hard to remix a tune that is so unique but Erol Alkan gives it go and the results are ok I guess.

1. Rocker (Original) (4:43)
2. Rocker (Dub) (5:03)
3. Rocker (Erol Alkan's Deaf Disco Re-vised) (8:50)

Svek, who is Swedish techno and house producer Jesper Dahlbäck, as well as the Jan Driver and Funk D'Void remixes. If you're not familiar with this tune you should be, I reckon it's one of the only techno tunes I can play my wife.

Nine Inch Nails - Only (2005)

Trent Reznor gets it, I mean he's one of the few artists who understand how to use the digital economy to his advantage. He openly distributes his music on Bit Torrent, gives away his midi files for all his recent releases and encourages producers to remix and share them. Now I reckon that's pretty smart and I've heard some of the resulting remixes and they're pretty good. This tunes 'Only' was the first single release from the album 'With Teeth' which is amazing. If you haven't heard it I'd advise you do. Also the accompanying video to the tune is great as well (see below). Remixed by pop man Richard X (gave us Liberty X, gee thanks Rich), but it's all good.

Tracklisting:

Robert Plant & The Strange Sensation - The Enchanter (UNKLE Reconstruction) (2005)

I love Led Zep, it was my Dad's influence I guess. I'm continuing the tradition and have got my 9 month old son already wearing one of their t-shirts (yeah they make baby sizes for parents just like me). This Robert Plant single form 4 years ago takes me back to tunes like 'Ramble On', and for some weird reason since buying the record new it's be riddled with slight scratches at both the intro and outro, not sure whether this was done on purpose by UNKLE or it's simply a reflection of the shit vinyl used to press records these days. Either way it's a cool track for those of us who like Led Zep and electronica.

Intaferon - Getoutoflondon (1983)

When I was growing up in New Zealand in the 80's we only had a few media outlets for decent music. One of these was a Sunday evening TV show called 'Radio With Pictures '. I've been noticing since going on my blogging crusade that a lot of the older stuff I tend to post was originally seen and recorded from that show. Laurie Anderson, Freur, Sex Pistols, Joy Division, New Order, PIL, The Dammed, so many to mention. I still have the VHS tapes of it all somewhere. This brings me to this tune from 1983 from one hit wonders Intaferon. I didn't get the vinyl of it until a few years ago in London when I suddenly remembered it for some reason. Had a great video clip with it too. Now it's not technically electronic but I like it. The B side mix seems to start without warning and has a few annoying effects and arrangements going on. I'd stick to the A side if you want to get a better experience.

Charlie May - Bug EP (2001)

I've always seen Charlie May as one of the more underrated UK producers. He's the man behind all of Sasha's big releases Airdrawndagger, Involver, and Xpander and one half of Spooky with Duncan Forbes. No surprises really that all the attention goes to Sasha, who at the best of times I find some what irritating. But back to Mr.May, lesser producers have gone on to bigger things, but not our Charlie, perhaps by choice, who knows? Now back in 2001 he released this double 12" release on UK house label Junior. Now that in itself was kind of strange decision because this wasn't their style of music, nor as a result did anyone really discover it. I had a copy in my office and always loved the tune Behemoth. It sits somewhere between progressive house, minimal and glitch, just kind of indescribable really. It keeps you locked in though, and that's always been my thing with it. All 4 tracks are epic 10 minute affairs but again I think they were designed to listen to. I've tried for many years to get a CD of it but failed, as a result it does have a few scratches from years of drunken abuse, but its good enough to share I'd say.

Tracklisting:
1. Behemoth (10:43)
2. Lost In Haste (9:57)
3. Feeding The Hand That Bites (10:47)
4. GKP (10:12)

Orbital - Frenetic / Chime Live Style Mix (2002)

One of my more recent favorite Orbital tracks featuring the vocals of Lisa Billson. I'm not sure what the synth actually is, but it sounds the same one they used in their 1992 remix of Golden Girls - Kinetic, it just sounds so fucking great and the way they wrap everything else around it just sounds so simple and is sheer genius. It still gives me goose bumps to be honest with you. It's back with a live style remix of 'Chime' which is exactly what it says it is, more like the versions you'd find on the Live at Glastonbury post I did a few weeks back except the thing is is it isn't actually live. Confusing right?

New Order - Acid House Mixes by 808 State (1988)

An early version of this EP that included AFX's remix of 808 State 's "Flow Coma" was planned to appear on Rephlex around the time of the Newbuild reissue. AFX decided the "Flow Coma" remix would go on the first Men Records single instead, so New Order: Acid House Mixes didn't come out until the time of Prebuild's release. Though this EP appears to be a New Order release, it was produced by the efforts of 808 State and Rephlex Records Records. These are acid house style covers rather than remixes. The "1988" on the EP cover refers to the early 808 State team of Graham Massey, Gerald Simpson, and Martin Price. (The words of an obviously dedicated anorak, not mine)

Freur - Doot Doot (1983)

Freur was Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, who later went on to form Underworld. Now I remember seeing the video and hearing this track back in 1983 and being some what confused as a very young teenager. For a start what the hell was Doot Doot?! That aside it's got something quite infectious and thoroughly original going on. They had a squiggle for a logo which was used on all their communications too, TV and print (as in the cover above), which again is kind of ahead of it's time I'd say. Anyway, I heard the tune again in the movie Vanilla Sky, only briefly though and the memories flooded back. The power of a electronic sequence to take you back years should never be underrated.
